ROME: The Italian Foreign Ministry has summoned the Iranian Ambassador in response to the recent arrest of Italian journalist Cecilia Sala in Tehran. The decision underscores Italy’s serious concern over the detainment and its implications for press freedom.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Antonio Tajani instructed the Secretary-General of the Ministry to call in Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Reza Sabouri. The move follows Sala’s arrest, which has prompted Italy to demand assurances for her safety and the protection of her rights. Tajani emphasized the government’s commitment to securing Sala’s release and support for her family during this period.

The Iranian News Agency “IRNA” reported that the Italian journalist was detained for allegedly violating Iranian laws. However, no specific laws were cited. The General Administration of Foreign Media of the Iranian Ministry of Culture and Guidance stated that the case is under investigation and that the arrest was conducted in line with existing regulations. The Italian Embassy in Tehran has been informed, and Sala has been granted consular access and allowed communication with her family.

Sala, 29, has been in police custody since the 19th of the month, as confirmed by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The ministry continues to work diligently to ensure her return to Italy while maintaining diplomatic channels open with Iranian authorities.
