Accra:The President of the Supreme Judicial Council, Judge Faiq Zaidan, emphasized the importance of reviewing and amending Iraq’s Constitution to address its shortcomings and update its provisions. He made this statement on the 21st anniversary of the 2005 referendum that established the permanent Iraqi Constitution.
According to Iraqi News Agency, Judge Zaidan acknowledged the sacrifices made to adopt the Constitution and expressed gratitude to the Supreme Religious Authority, the Iraqi people, and the international community for their support during that crucial period. He highlighted that the Constitution, drafted during a sensitive transitional time, now requires updates due to challenges faced in its application and interpretation over the years.
Judge Zaidan pointed out that these challenges have affected constitutional requirements, such as those related to parliamentary majorities, the election of the President, and the identification of the largest parliamentary bloc. He stressed that the Iraqi Parliament has a national and historical duty to review and amend these provisions according to constitutional mechanisms, while aligning with the law and the will of the people.
He further emphasized the need for legislation to evolve with the state’s democratic experience, ensuring state sovereignty and the rule of law, and safeguarding the rights and freedoms of individuals within Iraq’s democratic system.
