Baghdad: The Ministry of Justice is in discussions with the Red Cross regarding the cases of children who are accompanying their mothers, as well as prisoners transferred from Syria. Minister of Justice, Khalid Shawani, and Willem de Jong, head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delegation, met to explore enhancing cooperation and coordination on these sensitive matters.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Ministry released a statement detailing the discussions between Minister Shawani and Willem de Jong. They focused on foreign children in correctional facilities who accompany their mothers, and foreign detainees transferred from Syria to Iraq. The dialogue aimed at developing mechanisms for addressing these situations within legal and humanitarian frameworks.

The discussions highlighted the importance of international support for the detainees transferred to Iraq and stressed the role of the international community in fulfilling legal and humanitarian obligations. The Minister pointed out the need for stronger international cooperation to facilitate the return of children held in correctional facilities to their countries of origin, in line with agreements with the Iraqi side.

Willem de Jong expressed the ICRC’s commitment to assisting in communication with the concerned countries, aiding in the procedures for the return of detainees to their home countries, and continuing to work with the Ministry of Justice on humanitarian and correctional issues.
