Karbala:A workshop organized by the Geneva Call organization took place in the Holy Governorate of Karbala, focusing on the role of international humanitarian law in enhancing community security and peace. The event brought together participants from legal, educational, media, and social sectors, as well as representatives from religious institutions.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the workshop included discussions on fostering a culture of dialogue and coexistence, protecting civilians, and examining challenges that could impact social cohesion and stability. The role of institutions and societal elites in consolidating civil peace was also explored.
Dr. Tawhid Akram Al-Quraishi, Head of the Islamic University in Babylon and a professor of international humanitarian law in Baghdad, emphasized the importance of implementing international humanitarian law to promote community peace and security. He noted that the participation of various elites and stakeholders was instrumental in discussing the workshop’s themes and in formulating recommendations to enhance stability.
The workshop aimed to raise awareness about the rules of international humanitarian law and their connection to achieving community peace. It also addressed challenges to social cohesion, with Karbala highlighted as a significant model.
Fadel Awz, Advisor to the Secretary-General of the Holy Husayni Shrine, underscored the initiatives and projects led by the Holy Husayni and Holy Abbasid Shrines in addressing social issues and resolving conflicts since 2003. Awz advocated for documenting these experiences and presenting them at future conferences and seminars to replicate successful models across Iraqi governorates.
The workshop concluded with visions and proposals to foster dialogue and coexistence, aiming to activate the role of institutions and social elites in supporting security and stability.
