Ankara: The Turkish Parliament’s General Assembly re-elected Numan Kurtulmus, a member of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), as Speaker of Parliament for the second term of the 28th legislative term. This occurred during a voting session held Tuesday evening in the General Assembly of Parliament in the capital, Ankara, with the participation of 529 MPs.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Kurtulmus, a member of parliament representing Istanbul, received 329 votes in the third round, securing his re-election as Speaker of Parliament. He is the 30th Speaker of the Turkish Parliament.

Numan Kurtulmus, born in 1959, assumed the Speaker of the Turkish Parliament on June 7, 2023. He is the Deputy Chairman of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) and a member of the AKP Central Executive Committee. He served as Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey in AKP governments between 2014 and 2017.

Kurtulmus holds a PhD in Economics from Cornell University, where he served as a professor in 1992. In 1994, Numan Kurtulmus became a professor at Istanbul University’s Faculty of Economics, and in 2004, he became a full professor at the same university.
