Beirut: For the first time, the Lebanese government has established a timetable for the withdrawal of Hezbollah’s weapons, a move that has garnered significant international attention. The government’s upcoming session next Tuesday is set to address the issue of Hezbollah’s weapons, amidst mounting international pressure and President Joseph Aoun’s renewed commitment to establishing a one-armed state.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, President Aoun emphasized, in his recent speech marking Army Day, the importance of political unity in addressing the arms issue. He stated that it is the responsibility of all political entities, through the Council of Ministers, the Supreme Defense Council, Parliament, and other political forces, to seize this historic opportunity. The aim is to assert the exclusive possession of arms by the army and security forces without hesitation.

Although the outcome of the session remains uncertain, there is a flurry of activity among political forces to secure consensus on the agenda. Observers anticipate the government will likely approve the measure restricting arms possession to the state and authorize the Supreme Defense Council to implement this decision.

Furthermore, private sources have indicated that Army Commander Rodolphe Heikal may attend the next session to discuss the Army Command’s strategy for the arms control mechanism.
