Beirut: Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stated that “Hezbollah has the right to participate in political life, but its weapons are in the hands of the state,” emphasizing that the party must align itself with the state’s institutions.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, President Aoun made these remarks during an interview with the Egyptian ON TV channel ahead of his visit to Cairo. He also mentioned that Lebanon has requested the United States to facilitate indirect negotiations with Israel regarding the demarcation of the land border, asserting that this endeavor will be pursued in line with Lebanon’s national interests.

Aoun highlighted the pivotal role of the United States in exerting pressure on Israel, noting that “Washington’s intentions are currently positive toward Lebanon and the region.” Regarding Hezbollah, he reiterated the necessity for the group’s weapons to remain under state control and stressed that Hezbollah must conform to the state’s framework and institutions.

Additionally, he disclosed plans to meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Beirut to discuss the regulation of weapons within Palestinian camps to ensure security and stability.

On the topic of foreign aid for the military, President Aoun mentioned that during his meeting with the Egyptian President, he intends to discuss potential support for the Lebanese army, particularly in acquiring engineering equipment to address threats associated with explosives and tunnels.

An official statement from the Lebanese presidency confirmed that President Aoun is scheduled to depart from Beirut for an official visit to Egypt, at the invitation of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
