Legal expert: Assigning Judge Haider Hanoun to head the Integrity Commission is a step in the right direction

Baghdad Legal expert, Counselor Salem Hawas, confirmed that assigning Judge Haider Hanoun to head the Integrity Commission is an important step that was necessary earlier, especially after Al-Sudani’s decision to transfer the Director General of Investigations out of the Commission.

In a statement, Hawass affirmed: “The new government’s approach and its continuation of efforts to combat corruption, recover looted Iraqi funds, and those wanted in integrity cases are compatible with the ability, and integrity of Haider Hanoun, as this file is a priority in Al-Sudani’s government ministerial program.”

Hawass called for the activation of Law No. 30 of 2019, the first amendment to the Integrity Commission Law No. 30 of 2011, since the reasons for this amendment provided for the protection of public money and the prevention of cases of conflict of private interests with the public interest.

Hawass added that naming the law, after its amendment, the Law of the Integrity and Illicit Profits Commission, came to ensure the legitimacy of sources of funding for political and non-governmental organizations and to subject those who exploit their job positions in illicit gain from public money to legal accountability.
