Baghdad: Legal expert Ali Al-Tamimi has criticized the US “Iraq Liberation from Iran” bill, describing it as a violation of the principle of state sovereignty.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Tamimi highlighted that the announcement by a US Congress member, who proposed the bill aimed at liberating Iraq from Iran, infringes upon Articles 1, 2, and 18 of the UN Charter. He pointed out that Iraq’s representative holds the right to lodge a protest with the UN Secretary-General under Article 99 of the Charter.

Al-Tamimi further explained that the proposal breaches the principle of state sovereignty and empowers the Iraqi Foreign Ministry to call upon the Charg© d’Affaires at the US Embassy to present a strongly worded protest, as per Articles 40 to 45 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961.

Additionally, he noted that Iraq could file a protest against the United States for contravening Articles 27 and 28 of the 2008 Strategic Agreement between Iraq and the US. Al-Tamimi asserted that such actions constitute violations of the UN Charter, international agreements, and state sovereignty.
