Baghdad: Head of the State of Law Coalition Nouri al-Maliki has emphasized the significant challenges facing Iraq and the broader region in the aftermath of recent developments in Syria. Al-Maliki described the situation not as a sudden upheaval but as a series of escalating events.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, during an educational symposium titled “Awareness of Risks is Protection for Society,” al-Maliki expressed concerns about the potential fall of the Syrian regime by force. He highlighted Syria’s strategic importance and diverse composition, recalling his previous complaint against the Syrian regime for facilitating terrorist entry into Iraq. Despite this, he opposed the regime’s downfall by force due to the potential repercussions.
Al-Maliki remarked that the real threat does not stem from armies but from misinterpretations, emotional responses, and dormant terrorist cells, including remnants of the defunct Baath party. He emphasized the importance of elections, urging the selection of competent leaders to ensure a cohesive political system. He contrasted Iraq’s situation with Syria, noting Iraq’s democratic framework, peaceful power transitions, and political consensus.
He also acknowledged that past security issues hindered reconstruction efforts, as companies were reluctant to operate in environments plagued by terrorism and bombings.
