Samawah: The Iraqi Martyrs Foundation announced the completion of the opening of the second mass grave in the Samawah desert, Tal al-Sheikha, in the Muthanna Governorate. This grave contains victims from the Anfal massacre, a tragic event in Iraqi history.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the mass graves team has successfully extracted 155 remains from the site. These remains, identified as Kurdish women and children, are believed to be victims who perished during the Anfal operations carried out by the former regime in 1988.

The foundation has stated that the next step involves handing over the remains to the Forensic Medicine Department. This department will take samples to facilitate the identification of the victims, allowing for the possibility of providing closure to families affected by this tragedy.

In addition to the discoveries at this site, the foundation has reported the identification of seven more graves in the same area. These graves are included in the Martyrs Foundation’s future plans for excavation, with indications that more mass graves may exist in the region.
