Baghdad: Legal expert Counselor Salem Hawas emphasized the importance of adhering to constitutional and legal timeframes following the announcement of general election results, asserting that the maximum period allowed for forming the government is 155 days. This period begins the day after the official announcement of the final results by the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC).

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Hawas explained that this timeline is grounded in Article (20) of the IHEC Law, which states that the appeals process and their resolution should not exceed twenty days from the announcement date of the results. He further detailed the constitutional deadlines, including the convening of the first session of the Council of Representatives, the election of the Speaker and deputies, followed by the election of the President of the Republic and the nomination of the candidate from the largest parliamentary bloc to form the government, all of which must be completed within 135 days as per the Iraqi Constitution, particularly Articles (54), (55), (70), and (76).

The legal expert clarified that the total duration from the announcement of final results to the completion of government formation should not exceed 155 days. Hawas highlighted that any extension or delay beyond this timeframe would be a clear violation of the Constitution and the law.

Hawas concluded by urging all authorities and constitutional bodies to strictly adhere to these timeframes, as they are fundamental to the democratic constitutional system. He underscored the significance of complying with the directives of the Supreme Judicial Council and the supervision of the Federal Supreme Court to ensure the integrity of the electoral and constitutional process in the country.
