Baghdad: The head of the Executive Authority of the Media and Communications Commission, Baligh Abu Kalal, convened with the Governor of the Central Bank of Iraq, Nizar Nasser Hussein, to discuss enhancing cooperation in regulating digital payments and the licensing of global platforms.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the meeting focused on mechanisms to boost joint efforts in organizing digital payment services and developing the legislative and regulatory landscape for Iraq's digital economy. The discussions included strategies to manage digital applications and electronic payment platforms, ensuring their adherence to Iraqi laws and regulations. This initiative aims to fortify the regulatory environment, safeguarding user rights and promoting transparency and legal compliance.
A key agenda item was the collaboration in combating money laundering and terrorism financing, emphasizing the development of coordination mechanisms between the two institutions. These efforts align with both national and international standards to maintain the integrity of Iraq's financial and digital systems.
The dialogue also touched on reactivating financial transactions via the TikTok application. The focus was on regulating payments for influencers and content creators to ensure adherence to Iraq's legal, tax, and financial frameworks, thus protecting the rights of all involved parties.
Another significant area of discussion involved attracting and licensing global digital companies and platforms, such as Apple, Google, and Meta. The aim is to regulate their operations in Iraq, ensuring legal compliance and enhancing trust in the investment environment and the national digital economy.
Finally, the conversation led to the potential signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Communications and Media Commission and the Central Bank of Iraq. This agreement seeks to establish a cooperative institutional framework focused on digital payments, financial technologies, and electronic services, supporting digital transformation and reinforcing integration among state institutions.
