Merchants and Businessmen Protest Taxes, Baghdad Chamber of Commerce Rejects Customs Duty Increase

Baghdad: The Baghdad Chamber of Commerce organized a protest today, Sunday, against the imposition of taxes and the increase in customs duties, with a large gathering of merchants and businessmen in attendance.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the participants condemned the recent decisions of the Council of Ministers and the application of the customs tariff system to some imported goods, emphasizing their rejection of the recent increases in customs duties due to their direct negative impact on trade, the rise in commodity prices, and their repercussions on citizens and the national economy in general.

The participants stressed that these increases would burden both merchants and consumers, and affect the flow of imports and market activity.

For its part, the Baghdad Chamber of Commerce called for unifying positions among representatives of the commercial sector and working together to convey the merchants’ voice to the relevant authorities, in order to ensure the protection of economic interests
and support the stability of the local market.
