Baghdad: Mexico has decided to impose customs duties on US imports, in response to accusations made by US President Donald Trump against the Mexican government of being linked to drug trafficking, describing these accusations as “slander”.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed her country’s categorical rejection of these accusations in a post on the “X” platform. She announced that Mexico would adopt “customs measures” against the United States in retaliation for the measures announced by Trump.

Sheinbaum stated, “We categorically reject the accusations issued by the White House, which claim that the Mexican government is linked to criminal organizations.”

These measures follow an order by Trump, issued yesterday, to impose customs duties of 25% on Mexican and Canadian imports, and 10% on goods coming from China. Trump announced that these tariffs would remain in effect until the end of a national emergency due to the drug fentanyl and illegal immigration to
the United States.

Canadian energy products will face a 10% tariff, while Mexican energy imports will be subject to the full 25% tariff, officials told reporters.

A White House report on the tariffs indicated that they would remain in place “until the crisis abates,” although it did not provide specific details on what steps the three countries would need to take to secure an exemption.
