Beirut: In a recent public address, Lebanon's caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, emphasized the country's commitment to Resolution 1701, advocating for diplomacy as the only viable solution to Lebanon's current challenges. He highlighted the importance of involving the Lebanese army in southern Lebanon to prevent further bloodshed and destruction. According to National Iraqi News Agency, Mikati, in his televised statement, said, "The diplomatic solution is still on the table, and the Lebanese army must be brought into the south." He stressed the necessity of implementing Resolution 1701 to ensure stability in the region. This resolution, established after the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, calls for a cessation of hostilities and outlines measures such as Israel's withdrawal from Lebanon and the strengthening of the UNIFIL forces in the southern part of the country. The resolution further mandates that only the Lebanese army and international forces have a military presence in the border areas, aiming to maintain peace and security. Mikati's reaffirmation comes at a critical time when Lebanon continues to face significant political and economic challenges, underscoring the government's focus on diplomatic engagements and peaceful resolutions.
