Baghdad: Minister of Electricity, Engineer Ziyad Ali Fadhil, discussed at the Ministry’s headquarters today with a high-level delegation from the American company Excelerate Energy the steps to import and process liquefied natural gas (LNG) via the floating platform in Khor Al-Zubair in preparation for the summer of 2026.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Ministry stated that the minister held a meeting with the company’s Executive Vice President and Commercial Director, Oliver Simpson, where they focused on the implementation details and timeline of the project. The company pledged to supply gas before the summer of 2026, which represents a strategic step to secure Iraq’s gas needs for power plants during peak periods.

The Minister directed that an urgent letter be submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office to form a higher committee from the Ministries of Electricity, Oil, and Transport, with the aim of preparing a draft final contract as soon as possible.

The Council of Ministers recently authorized the Ministry of Electricity to sign a gas supply contract with Excelerate Energy to ensure the operation of gas plants and achieve greater stability in the supply of electricity in the country.
