Samarra: The Minister of Water Resources, Muthanna al-Tamimi, inspected the Samarra Dam and the Tharthar Canals to monitor their operational readiness.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Minister Al-Tamimi conducted a field visit to the Samarra Dam and the Tharthar Flood and Irrigation Canals in Salah al-Din Governorate. He was accompanied by the Directors General of the Planning and Follow-up Department, the General Authority for Dams and Reservoirs, the Iraq Company, and several directors from the ministry's departments in the governorate. The purpose of the visit was to inspect the condition of the water facilities, monitor operation and maintenance work, and improve their operational efficiency.

During the visit, Al-Tamimi reviewed the Samarra Dam, which includes 17 main gates, and its role in regulating water flow, controlling flood surges, and diverting water to the Tharthar Depression when needed. He also received a technical briefing on operation and maintenance work, procedures for maintaining the dam's safety and readiness, and held a meeting with ministry officials. The meeting addressed the water situation in Salah al-Din Governorate, water releases, the needs of the water facilities, maintenance work, and ways to enhance performance efficiency in line with the water plan's requirements.

The statement added that the minister also inspected the Tharthar Flood Canal, which includes 36 regulating gates for channeling flood surges from the Tigris River to Lake Tharthar. He reviewed its readiness and operational procedures. The Tharthar Irrigation Canal, where he followed up on the ongoing maintenance, excavation, and backfilling work as part of its development project to increase its discharge capacity to 250 cubic meters per second, thus enhancing water transfer efficiency and supporting water releases into the Euphrates River.

He emphasized the necessity of adhering to the technical standards for the safety of water facilities and continuing maintenance and rehabilitation programs, as well as monitoring operational readiness, to contribute to improving water resource management efficiency and strengthening water security in the country.
