Baghdad: The Ministerial Council for National Security engaged in discussions concerning the Joint Operations Command’s proposal to minimize militarization and reassess security and military deployment within urban areas. This meeting was chaired by Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Sabah al-Numan, the spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief, stated that the council convened on Wednesday evening to deliberate on the country’s security situation, review the agenda topics, and make necessary decisions and recommendations. Al-Sudani also received a briefing on efforts by the Supreme Security Committee concerning the upcoming parliamentary elections set for next month, emphasizing the success of this constitutional process.
Further discussions during the meeting centered on the national assessment of risks related to terrorist financing, highlighting international commendation for Iraq’s efforts in this domain. The council also addressed ongoing arms contracts between Iraq and Italy.
The Joint Operations Command’s proposal underscored the need for all ministries and security agencies to adopt measures aimed at reducing militarization. It also stressed the importance of re-evaluating security and military presence within cities and implementing balanced mechanisms that ensure security while maintaining the civilian nature of urban life. These efforts aim to enhance Iraq’s standing on global peace indicators.
