Basra: The Ministry of Construction and Housing has announced significant advancements in the pipeline work for the Greater Basra Water Project. The General Directorate of Water, a branch of the Ministry, highlighted the acceleration of work, particularly in the area of the Military Bridge crossing, as part of Phase One of the project.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Director General Ammar Adel Hussein revealed that work is being conducted in two shifts, day and night, to hasten the project's completion. A considerable number of concealed culvert works have already been finished, and there is notable progress in the implementation of the remaining 37 km of the pipeline. The project is a crucial part of Basra Governorate's infrastructure, included in the Ministry's government program initiatives.
The Greater Basra Water Project is vital for the governorate, with its first phase focusing on laying a pipeline to supply the city center. This is a continuation of the project's third and fourth phases at Al-Haritha Station, designed to handle a capacity of 200,000 m³/hour. Project resident engineer Murtadha Mohammed reported that the completion rate has surpassed 86.5%, with 26.5 km of the pipeline already laid. Current efforts involve transporting concrete jig pipes and preparing for tunneling using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs).
The project is seen as a pioneering initiative to enhance Basra's water system and is recognized as one of Iraq's key strategic projects for ensuring a stable supply of potable water to the city's center.
