Kolwezi: More than 100 people have been killed in a landslide that struck an informal gold mine in the south of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, according to local sources. Police confirmed that the collapse occurred at 'Mulondo Lualaba' mine near the city of Kolwezi in Lualaba Province, a mineral-rich region that attracts large numbers of adults and children seeking work in unregulated and unsafe mines. Workers there often endure dangerous conditions and exposure to toxic substances.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, initial reports indicated that nearly 70 workers were buried in the landslide, and that many of those recovered so far were internally displaced persons. Rescue teams continue their efforts to search for survivors amid fears that more victims remain trapped under the rubble.

For her part, Lualaba Governor Fifi Masuka attributed the collapse to the heavy rainfall that recently hit the area.
