Baghdad: A new regulatory body is set to be established as MP Nour Adel, a member of the Parliamentary Environment and Health Committee, announced her support for legislation creating the Federal Food and Drug Authority during the current parliamentary session.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Adel emphasized the significance of the Federal Food and Drug Authority project during a press conference on Sunday. She stated, “We will work on the Federal Food and Drug Authority project, and we will ensure that the new law is feasible and applicable. This is not a new bureaucratic institution, but rather the first line of defense for the health and finances of citizens.”

Adel clarified that the intention is not to mirror existing authorities but to establish a regulatory body equipped with the necessary tools for effective operation. She highlighted the involvement of more than five ministries and sectoral bodies in the processes of licensing, importing, monitoring, buying, selling, and overseeing the market and food.

Furthermore, Adel stressed the importance of streamlining responsibilities by distributing all food and medicine through a single entity. This approach aims to ensure the quality, safety, and validity of these products, while also defining and holding accountable the entity responsible for these tasks.
