Baghdad: A number of Iraqi Members of Parliament on Saturday warned of political efforts aimed at revoting on the previously canceled Khor Abdullah Agreement, stressing that any such move would constitute a violation of Iraq’s sovereign rights.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, in a joint press conference, MP Saud Al-Saadi stated, ‘Any attempt to collect signatures or to add a clause for revoting or correcting the vote, whether by the Presidency of Parliament or by some MPs, will place the Council of Representatives under accusation of high treason against Iraq’s sovereign rights, which extend beyond the Khor Abdullah Agreement alone.’

Al-Saadi explained that ‘the demarcation of the maritime borders was carried out under the so-called ‘Agreement on the Regulation of Maritime Navigation,’ but the process extended beyond marker 162 in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 833 – a move that resulted in Iraq losing vital oil wells and significant gas fields.’

He stressed that ‘if there is an intention to revote on the agreement, it must undergo the appropriate constitutional and legal procedures. This includes reopening negotiations with the Kuwaiti side, drafting a new bill by the Council of Ministers, and then referring it to the Council of Representatives for first and second readings before it can be put to a vote.’
