NASA Extends Voyager 2 Mission by Implementing Energy-Saving Measures

Nasa: NASA has announced the launch of a process aimed at conserving energy aboard the Voyager 2 spacecraft and extending its operational lifespan in space. According to Iraqi News Agency, the process, dubbed 'Big Bang,' aims to deactivate some of the spacecraft's high-power instruments and replace them with more energy-efficient ones, while maintaining sufficient operating temperatures to ensure their continued functionality. NASA explained that these energy-saving measures will allow three scientific instruments aboard the spacecraft to continue operating for at least another year. Without the measures, one of these instruments would have had to be shut down by the end of 2026. In a related development, NASA announced in March 2025 that it had begun deactivating some equipment aboard the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecraft as part of efforts to reduce energy consumption and extend the operational lifespans of the two historic missions. According to ScienceAlert last July, NASA announced that Voyager 1, w hich was launched after Voyager 2, would reach an unprecedented distance from Earth this fall. The two probes are the only human-made objects to have traveled beyond the solar system into interstellar space. They are identical in design, each with a launch mass of 815 kilograms and a cube-shaped body measuring approximately four meters on each side. Voyager 2 was launched on August 2, 1977, 16 days before Voyager 1. In addition to their scientific instruments, both probes carry gold-plated discs containing messages and images from humanity intended for any civilizations that may be encountered in space.
