Diwaniyah: The national campaign to remove water hyacinth from the Diwaniyah River has begun, marking a significant step in addressing the ecological challenge posed by the invasive plant species.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the initiative was launched by the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Adnan Faihan, and involves a collaborative effort from multiple governmental bodies. These include the Ministries of Interior, Environment, Transport, Youth and Sports, Agriculture, and Health, along with provincial councils and volunteer teams. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of water hyacinth on river ecosystems.
Shawqi al-Fatlawi, head of the volunteer teams in Diwaniyah, highlighted the importance of this coordinated effort in combating the spread of the water hyacinth. He emphasized that the involvement of various sectors underscores the serious threat the plant poses to waterways.
Furthermore, Ihsan al-Najjar, Director of Irrigation and Drainage Projects and Maintenance in Diwaniyah, noted the significance of such campaigns in conjunction with volunteer teams and governmental support. He stated that these efforts are crucial for limiting the plant's proliferation.
The campaign is set to continue across the province, leveraging both mechanical and human resources from the Ministry of Water Resources. This sustained effort aims to effectively manage and prevent the further spread of water hyacinth, ensuring the protection and preservation of the province's river systems.
