Diwaniyah: The National Security Service announced the arrest of 3 women, one of whom is a midwife, for selling infants.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Service said in a statement, “Through citizens’ cooperation in reporting the sale of newborn babies for trafficking in Diwaniyah Governorate, this prompted intelligence detachments to intensify efforts. After analyzing the information and verifying its accuracy, judicial approvals were obtained.”
The statement continued, “Our field detachments were able to arrest the accused red-handed and seize in her possession a male child, no more than one day old, a sum of money, and gold jewelry. She explicitly confessed to her trade, and three other suspects were associated with her, one of whom works as an unlicensed ‘midwife.'”
The statement added, “The operation resulted in the seizure of medical equipment and tools that were used in illegal delivery operations. The infant was secured and immediately transferred to the premature infants’ ward at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital to receive the necessary medical care. The accused were detained in accordance with the legal articles related to human trafficking crimes, pending the completion of legal procedures.”
