Baghdad: The National Security Service announced on Friday the dismantling of networks involved in smuggling crude oil in several provinces, the seizure of tankers and sites used in smuggling operations, and the arrest of five suspects.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, a statement from the Service indicated that, in a high-quality intelligence operation targeting oil smuggling networks, the National Security Service, after obtaining judicial approvals, was able to dismantle a network involved in smuggling crude oil.

The statement explained that, "The operation, which was carried out in the provinces of Basra and Dhi Qar, resulted in the seizure of two tankers loaded with approximately 80,000 liters of smuggled crude oil and the arrest of one member of the network."

The Service added that, "Continuing intelligence monitoring, the Service was able to uncover three sites used for smuggling crude oil near Imam Ali Air Base on the Dhi Qar Expressway, while the tactical team arrested two suspects while they were attempting to flee at the Sidra checkpoint."

He indicated that "in another operation, the National Security Service, based on precise information and after obtaining judicial approvals, uncovered a site used for smuggling crude oil in the Baiji district, specifically in the Al-Siniya area."

He continued, "The smugglers exploited a car wash garage as a cover for their criminal activity, connecting a pipeline to the Al-Siniya refinery to siphon and smuggle crude oil. Upon inspecting the site, the force found oil slicks and traces indicating the pipeline's use in smuggling operations."

Two suspects involved in the case were arrested. The agency noted that "the five suspects, along with the seized items, were referred to the competent judicial authorities to take legal action against them."
