National Sovereignty as a Pillar of the Modern State Highlighted by Federal Court Head

Baghdad: The Head of the Federal Supreme Court, Judge Munther Ibrahim Hussein, emphasized the significance of national sovereignty as a fundamental pillar of the modern state during a ceremony held by the Federal Court to mark Sovereignty Day. The event was attended by the Court’s judges, including its head and members, as well as its staff.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Judge Hussein underscored that national sovereignty is not only enshrined in constitutional texts but also represents the collective will of the people for freedom and independence. He highlighted the importance of decision-making stability, law enforcement, and institution-building to ensure a dignified life for citizens, respecting their history and aspirations.

Judge Hussein elaborated on the dimensions of sovereignty, stating it extends beyond geographical boundaries, incorporating a national and ethical responsibility to safeguard rights, dignity, and justice. He stressed the inseparability of sovereignty from an independent judiciary, asserting that the rule of law and respect for the judiciary are crucial for state sovereignty.

He further explained the role of constitutional adjudication in maintaining the balance among government branches and protecting citizens’ rights against legislation that contradicts constitutional freedoms. Judge Hussein emphasized that constitutional adjudication is vital for preserving the federal structure and legitimacy of the state, which relies on respecting individual rights and the law.

In celebrating Sovereignty Day, Judge Hussein noted the occasion’s importance in reaffirming the foundational principles of the state, including national unity and judicial independence. He paid tribute to martyrs and the wounded, acknowledging their sacrifices as essential to the state’s security and independence, and called for their memory to inspire continued dedication to defending the homeland.
