Jerusalem: The Ynet website has disclosed new information regarding the ongoing talks between Israel and Syria, suggesting significant progress over recent weeks towards a potential agreement. Syria is reportedly keen on an Israeli withdrawal from its territory.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, senior Israeli officials have indicated that Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa is unlikely to agree to a peace deal without Israel withdrawing from the Golan Heights. Consequently, discussions are currently centered on a security agreement. The United States is reportedly aware of the developments and is actively participating in the talks.

The Ynet website highlights a report from al-Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, citing sources in Damascus close to the Syrian government. These sources confirmed that indirect negotiations are ongoing between the nations, under regional and international sponsorship, with the Syrian president’s approval. Syria demands an end to Israeli attacks and incursions, alongside a reinstatement of the 1974 Separation of Forces Agreement. In contrast, Israel seeks a new buffer zone, and a security agreement may soon be reached, potentially leading to a comprehensive peace agreement.

According to Ynet, the sources believe a permanent agreement is unlikely at this stage, but an interim agreement paving the way for a future accord, akin to the Abraham Accords, is possible. The process is reportedly advancing swiftly, with Damascus relying on Arab mediation to maintain its sovereignty. Syria hopes the United States and Western nations will press Israel to cease hostilities.

The Ynet report further states that while the Syrian president is eager for an agreement, he insists on a prompt Israeli withdrawal from Syrian territories. Tel Aviv remains opposed and is contemplating delaying or altering the withdrawal terms within the ongoing discussions.

US President Donald Trump remarked on Sunday about the potential normalization of Syria-Israel relations, revealing that he lifted sanctions on Damascus to facilitate its progress and development.

Hebrew media reported last Saturday that Israel and Syria might finalize a peace agreement by the end of 2025.
