New Generation Bloc Protests Leader’s Arrest Amid Political Tensions in Sulaymaniyah

Sulaymaniyah: The New Generation Bloc has voiced strong opposition to the political discord and the alleged targeting of political opponents in Sulaymaniyah, emphasizing the need for transparent legal procedures in the arrest of the Movement’s leader, Shaswar Abdul Wahid.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Bloc’s Head, MP Sarwa Abdul Wahid, addressed the media in a joint press conference, criticizing the arrest of Shaswar Abdul Wahid as illegal and lacking transparency. She stated that discussions had been held with various political blocs, most of which have shown support for the New Generation Movement’s leader and have condemned the breach of legal norms in Sulaymaniyah. The Bloc is also awaiting the perspective of the Parliament Speaker on the arbitrary actions aimed at marginalizing political opponents by detaining them without due legal process.

MP Sarwa Abdul Wahid further elaborated that the New Generation Movement’s leader was expected to be released on bail immediately following his arrest. However, she claims that the Sulaymaniyah judiciary has resisted this due to political pressure from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan. She expressed gratitude towards the political blocs within the Council of Representatives for their solidarity, stressing that the resolution of disputes should be governed by law rather than involving the courts in political conflicts and the elimination of political rivals in the Kurdistan Region.
