Nineveh: Nineveh Governor Abdul Qadir al-Dakhil affirmed that Al-Khasfa Cemetery represents “a humanitarian crime that shames the conscience and a part of a dark history that cannot be overcome without uncovering the full truth.”

According to National Iraqi News Agency, speaking at a press conference today, al-Dakhil said the cemetery contains the remains of thousands of martyrs from various ethnicities and backgrounds. He noted that more than 2,000 people were executed in a single day, including residents of Wadi Hajar, as part of a mass extermination campaign carried out by ISIS against the people of Mosul.

The governor explained that work at the cemetery began several months ago in coordination with judicial and health authorities, particularly the Forensic Medicine Department, the Martyrs’ Foundation, and the Mass Graves Directorate. Meanwhile, the University of Mosul is preparing biological studies to verify the identities of the remains.

Al-Dakhil added that the local government plans to establish a permanent memorial at or near Al-Khasfa site, in honor of the victims and to document the atrocities of violence and extremism that the city endured.
