Baghdad: The Ministry of Oil has outlined a package of promising projects that will secure Iraq the necessary quantities of gas to operate power plants and cover other domestic uses.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Oil Hayan Abdul Ghani stated that the Ministry of Oil, under the direction of the Prime Minister, is advancing the project to establish a fixed platform at the Faw Port for importing liquefied natural gas. This initiative is part of a broader effort to secure the gas needed for power generation and other applications across the country.

Abdul Ghani further elaborated on the Ministry’s plans to expedite the gas supply process by establishing a floating platform at Khor Al-Zubair Port, intended to import between 500 and 700 million cubic feet of gas. A company has committed to delivering this platform within a month after the contract signing, with negotiations currently underway to finalize the necessary procedures. This move aims to secure substantial quantities of gas for Iraq’s energy needs.

Additionally, the Ministry has approved the extension of a pipeline from Khor Al-Zubair port to the national gas grid, pledging to complete this project within 120 days. Work has already commenced, with significant progress reported. This pipeline aims to ensure energy sources are available for power plants ahead of peak demand periods.

In the southern region, a project involving the Al-Faihaa field is set to produce 100,000 barrels of oil per day and over 130 million cubic feet of gas. This project has been completed, and the gas will soon be funneled into the national grid to support power generation. The Italian company ENI, operating in the al-Zubair field, has played a significant role in the gas investment process, including installing a 250-megawatt power plant. This station will supply electrical energy to the al-Zubair field, with any surplus redirected to the national grid.
