One Minute Apart.. Two Earthquakes Hit Malatya, Southern Turkey

Two earthquakes, the first with a magnitude of 4.8 and the second with a magnitude of 4.5, hit this afternoon, the state of Malatya, southern Turkey, and the difference between them is one minute.

The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) said in a statement that the first two tremors occurred at 16:39 in the Yesilyurt region of Malatya state, at a depth of 6.35 km underground, and the second in the same area, one minute after the first occurred, at a depth of 7 km underground.

The two tremors were felt by residents of neighboring states of Malatya, including Adi Yaman, Sanliurfa, Gaziantep and Kahramanmaras in southern Turkey.

For his part, the Governor of Malatya, Hulusi Sahin announced that the local authorities did not immediately receive any reports of casualties or damage, and that most of the residents were forced to leave their homes and take refuge in the streets, public squares and parks for fear of demolishing buildings, especially high-rise buildings.
