Baghdad: Parliament Speaker Dr. Mahmoud al-Mashhadani has condemned the assassination of Safaa al-Mashhadani, a member of the Baghdad Provincial Council and candidate for the National Sovereignty-Legislative Alliance, urging the government and security agencies to conduct thorough investigations into the incident.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, al-Mashhadani expressed his sorrow over the loss, highlighting Safaa al-Mashhadani’s dedication to the Tarmiyah district and his candidacy within the National Sovereignty-Legislative Alliance. The assassination occurred due to an explosive device targeting al-Mashhadani and his companions, described as a terrorist act against individuals committed to justice and patriotism.
The speaker emphasized the need for urgent investigative measures and the formation of a committee to identify and prosecute those responsible for the crime. He assured that the House of Representatives would also establish an investigative committee to probe the terrorist attack and ensure justice for the slain council member.
A security source reported that Safaa al-Hijazi, also a candidate in the upcoming parliamentary elections, was killed in the explosion targeting his vehicle in the Tarmiyah area, north of Baghdad, earlier in the day.
