Baghdad: The House of Representatives will continue its sessions without altering the electoral law, according to Parliament’s rapporteur. As the legislative term approaches its end, the Council of Representatives has emphasized its dedication to maintaining regular sessions and approving significant legislation before the legislative recess begins.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Parliament Rapporteur MP Baydaa Khader Al Salman highlighted the Council’s preparations for the legislative recess, scheduled to start on May 9. The possibility of extending or postponing parliamentary sessions remains uncertain. However, the Council is committed to holding sessions and enacting important laws.

Al Salman noted that time constraints and political pressures might influence the interpellations aimed at scrutinizing government actions and state institutions. These interpellations are designed to hold executive officials accountable and ensure proper governance.

Addressing potential amendments to the election law, Al Salman clarified that the timeframe is insufficient for conducting the electoral process. The election commission requires approximately six months to complete the necessary technical and logistical preparations under the existing law. Consequently, any new amendments would necessitate changing or postponing the election date. The elections are scheduled to take place on November 11, and there will be no changes to the current law.
