Axios: The “Peace Council” has issued a call for Israel to withdraw its military forces from the Gaza Strip contingent upon the commencement of Hamas’ disarmament.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the US-led Peace Council has emphasized the necessity for Israel to execute a “proper withdrawal of forces” from Gaza if Hamas begins surrendering its weapons. The council’s demands include the disarmament of Hamas, the dismantling of its military infrastructure, the allowance for international forces to stabilize the region, and cooperation in Gaza’s reconstruction and rebuilding efforts.
The report from Axios highlights that Jared Kushner, adviser and son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and representatives of Hamas in Egypt. The meeting, which took place on August 16, aimed to urge Hamas to commit to disarmament, discuss transitioning power in Gaza to a technocratic government, and ensure Hamas is excluded from future governance.
This meeting marks Kushner’s first engagement with Hamas leadership since a ceasefire agreement was signed in October 2015. Kushner is also set to visit Israel on August 17 to discuss the necessary actions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The October 2015 ceasefire, mediated by Egypt, Qatar, the United States, and Turkey, outlined three phases to end hostilities. The initial phase involved a cessation of conflict, prisoner releases, and a partial Israeli withdrawal. Subsequent phases were intended to fully resolve the conflict and initiate reconstruction. However, progress beyond the first phase has yet to be realized.
