Louisville: Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear announced that at least three people were killed and 11 others were injured after a UPS wide-body cargo plane crashed in Louisville, with a massive fireball seen shortly after takeoff.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the plane had a crew of three on board, and federal officials said they are all believed to have died. WLKY, a CBS affiliate, aired footage of the crash as it happened. The plane took off with flames on one wing, and a massive fireball erupted upon impact.

Several buildings in an industrial area beyond the runway caught fire after the crash, and thick black smoke billowed into the darkened sky. “UPS Flight 2976 crashed at approximately 5:15 p.m. local time on Tuesday, November 4, shortly after takeoff from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport in Kentucky,” the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement, adding that the plane was en route to Honolulu.

FAA records show the crashed aircraft, an MD-11 cargo plane, was 34 years old. Boeing discontinued the MD-11 program after acquiring it as part of its merger with McDonnell Douglas.
