Basra: The Ministry of Planning has sanctioned the upgrade of the administrative status of the Umm Qasr sub-district, located west of Basra Governorate, to a district level, officially designating it as Umm Qasr District.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, MP Ali Shaddad Al-Fares confirmed that the decision was based on the Ministry of Planning’s communication, letter No. (14346/6/4), dated May 8, 2023. This letter contained the approval necessary for the transition of Umm Qasr from a sub-district to a district.

He further mentioned that the Basra Governorate Council had earlier approved this elevation, officially naming it the Umm Qasr District. All pertinent approvals and cartographic details were provided, along with Basra Governorate Council Resolution No. (11) of 2024. This resolution outlines the administrative boundaries of the newly established district, endorsed by official signatures and seals.
