Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani stressed that if there is a country that deserves to celebrate democracy, it is Iraq. In a speech marking the International Day of Democracy, the Prime Minister said that Iraq has offered hundreds of thousands of martyrs, and many prominent figures eliminated, and paid the price for absurd wars.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Prime Minister highlighted Iraq’s unique model of democracy, emphasizing that democracy was established through the will of the Iraqi people. He acknowledged that there is still much work to be done to consolidate the foundations of democracy.
The Prime Minister asserted that democracy in Iraq has succeeded and is recognized by all countries of the world. He noted that the government has worked to support all the freedoms guaranteed by the constitution.
He further stated that elections are the fundamental mechanism of the democratic system and will be held on time, assuring that they have been provided with full support. He emphasized that there is no alternative to the constitutional path and no way back.
The Prime Minister concluded by stating that abandoning the electoral vote means the presence of a corrupt alternative, indicating that the path to democracy will always require more work.
