PM Directs Effective Measures to Reduce Waste and Loss of Electricity

Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani has directed immediate measures to reduce power waste and losses in the national electricity distribution network. A statement from his media office said Al-Sudani chaired a meeting of the Ministry of Electricity’s technical team to review plans for improving revenue collection, expanding electronic payment, and installing meters across all consumption points. The meeting also discussed the ministry’s detailed plan for the next three months to curb losses in the power grid.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the statement noted that the Prime Minister ordered the dismissal of 15 center directors for failing to implement collection instructions and address power waste, stressing that reducing losses must be a top priority for distribution branch managers. He also granted them broader powers and instructed strict accountability for underperformance.

Al-Sudani further tasked the Advisory Board with studying a project to settle outstanding electricity bills for all subscribers and submit recommendations to the Ministerial Council for Economy.
