Baghdad: Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani directed that a comprehensive assessment and full restructuring be carried out for all tax administration systems in Iraq, including the policies and operational mechanisms in place.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, this directive emerged during his chairmanship of a specialized meeting focused on implementing governance for a comprehensive tax system. The meeting was attended by senior officials from the General Commission for Taxes, representatives of relevant institutions, and delegates from the international consulting firm Oliver Wyman.
The meeting reviewed previous efforts aimed at the comprehensive development of the tax administration sector through a series of reform measures, with a key focus on engaging specialized international companies to implement full automation of tax departments. Detailed presentations were delivered by these companies outlining their proposed programs and implementation plans.
Al-Sudani instructed the Higher Committee for Tax Reform to study Oliver Wyman's planning and implementation program and submit a detailed report, as the program offers an integrated methodology for reforming and modernizing tax administration. This approach positions tax administration as a fundamental pillar for increasing sustainable government revenues, achieving a transparent and equitable tax system, and enhancing Iraq's financial and investment ratings.
The meeting also reviewed comparable experiences in several Arab countries, highlighting the level of development achieved and the increases in tax revenues recorded during the first year of implementation.
