Babylon: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani highlighted the significant role of Iraqi tribes in supporting the political process, urging their active participation in the upcoming parliamentary elections as a tribute to their sacrifices and historical contribution to state-building.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Sudani made these remarks during his attendance at a commemorative ceremony for the 1920 Revolution, held at the guesthouse of Sheikh Qasim Karim Al-Alwan, a leader of the Bani Hassan tribes in the Al-Kifl district, Babylon province. The event saw the attendance of numerous tribal leaders, dignitaries, and local residents.
Al-Sudani expressed gratitude to the Iraqi tribes of all backgrounds and sects, particularly praising Sheikh Al-Alwan and the Bani Hassan tribes for organizing the event. He emphasized that the 1920 Revolution is not just a historical event but a pivotal moment marking the birth of modern Iraq, underscoring the tribes’ foundational role in resisting colonialism and demanding independence.
He commended the tribes’ significant contribution post-2003, especially their response to the religious authority’s call for defensive jihad and their vital role in combating terrorism alongside the security forces. He highlighted the substantial sacrifices they have made for the country’s stability.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of maintaining the tribal role in national life by actively participating in the upcoming elections, declaring that such engagement is a form of loyalty to the blood of the martyrs. He noted that the 1920 Revolution was marked by reliance on the religious authority’s guidance and the courage of tribal men from all sects, stating that the current security and stability are results of those sacrifices.
Al-Sudani also discussed the continuous role of the religious authority in guiding state-building through calls to fight corruption and ensure weapons are under state control. He stated that these principles are central to the government’s program and crucial for building a strong, stable state governed by the rule of law.
Regarding national sovereignty, Al-Sudani asserted that no individual or entity has the right to impose classifications on society based on religion or ideology. He emphasized that only the state has the authority to control arms, declaring that no party should override the state’s authority.
He expressed confidence in the tribes’ ability to support the state and its security forces in mitigating negative phenomena. On regional affairs, Al-Sudani condemned the ongoing atrocities in Gaza, describing them as a blatant disregard for international laws and institutions. He called for heightened awareness of the serious regional challenges.
Al-Sudani reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to a policy of wisdom and balance, standing against aggression while taking political, legal, media, and humanitarian actions to support Palestinians. He emphasized Iraq’s dedication to protecting its national interests and avoiding entanglement in unwanted conflicts.
In his concluding remarks, Al-Sudani reiterated that the government’s program prioritizes essential services for the Iraqi people. He acknowledged the legacy of mismanagement and poor planning, praised the tribes’ support for development projects, and expressed hope for continued cooperation, particularly in agriculture, commerce, and industry, affirming that Iraq possesses the resources to secure a future worthy of its people.
