Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani emphasized the crucial need to facilitate the requirements necessary for organizing the upcoming elections. The Prime Minister’s media office released a statement highlighting the Council of Ministers’ session, chaired by al-Sudani, which focused on completing decisions from its fourteenth session.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the session began with a recitation of Surat Al-Fatihah in memory of Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr and his sister Amina al-Sadr, along with all the martyrs of Iraq. This commemoration coincided with the anniversary of their martyrdom and the 22nd anniversary of the fall of the previous regime.
Al-Sudani remarked on the significance of Iraq’s liberation from the Ba’ath regime, describing it as a pivotal moment in the country’s history. It marked the beginning of Iraq’s journey toward freedom and independence. He noted the progress made since then, including the establishment of a democratic state and a constitution that protects the rights of all Iraqis.
The statement further detailed the Council’s decision to hold legislative elections on November 11, 2025, based on a recommendation from the Independent High Electoral Commission. The Prime Minister underscored the government’s commitment to providing the necessary conditions for this democratic event.
Additionally, the Council of Ministers approved recommendations related to the Iraqi offshore fields and endorsed a plan to invest in the Akkas gas field. The initial phase of the project will involve the Middle Oil Company and Schlumberger, aiming to produce 100 million standard cubic feet of gas per day within a year.
In light of the forthcoming Arab Summit in Baghdad, the Council also addressed the logistical requirements for the event. Furthermore, steps were taken to enhance Iraq’s foreign relations, including an agreement with Mauritania on mutual visa exemptions for certain passport holders. The memorandum’s signing will not require additional financial resources and will be reviewed by the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers before finalization.
