Baghdad: The head of the Center for Political Thinking, Professor of Public Policy at the University of Baghdad, Dr. Ihsan Al-Shammari, emphasized that the policy Donald Trump might adopt towards Iraq, following his victory in the US elections, will be fundamentally different from that of the current President Joe Biden and the Democrats. He pointed out that the Iraqi government, led by Al-Sudani, must be acutely aware of this shift.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Shammari stated, “Trump is mobilized against all his enemies, not only Iran and the armed factions associated with it, but even against his political opponents in the United States of America. He does not rely on a policy of maneuver but rather views Iraq either as a friendly and allied country, or a hostile and allied country to Iran against him.” He emphasized that Trump would not tolerate the presence of Iranian influence that threatens American interests in Iraq.

He further elaborated that the Iraqi government urgently needs to de
vise a swift diplomatic strategy, either before or after the elections in Iraq, that aligns with the interests of the Iraqi people. It must take a definitive stance towards the United States and react swiftly to alter Trump’s perception of the government.

Al-Shammari warned that Trump might not hesitate to make decisions against the Iraqi government, particularly in the economic realm, such as lifting the immunity of Iraqi funds in the United States. This, he cautioned, could trigger a significant crisis in Iraq, with potentially severe repercussions for the current political class. Therefore, he advised that a clear governmental policy should be established towards the incoming American administration.
