Baghdad: Pollution levels in Baghdad have jumped to first place globally, according to international indicators.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Baghdad’s air quality index (AQI) reached 386. An AQI above 200 is classified as “very unhealthy,” with PM2.5 concentrations being the primary concern. This significant increase in pollution levels is attributed to a combination of dusty conditions, calm winds, and other contributing factors.

Baghdad’s ranking in pollution levels fluctuates constantly; however, it remains consistently among the most polluted cities worldwide. The Iraqi capital is grappling with severely poor air quality, characterized by persistent dust, a noticeable sulfur smell, and the presence of combustion byproducts of unknown origin.

These adverse environmental conditions pose serious health risks, including respiratory issues, exacerbation of heart problems, and impaired lung function. Vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly, and individuals with existing health conditions, are particularly at risk.
