Basra: The Ministry of Electricity announced that power transmission towers were subjected to deliberate acts of sabotage in Basra Governorate.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Ministry of Electricity’s media office reported that two power transmission towers on the 132 kV Khor Al-Zubair – Sports City and Khor Al-Zubair – Industrial Institute lines were deliberately sabotaged. These actions resulted in a power loss estimated at 300 megawatts, impacting the supply to the Sports City, Bab Al-Zubair, Industrial Institute, and Abu Flus stations. The media office noted that these stations would be integrated into the (2×2) programming from the secondary source (Khor Al-Zubair – Bab Al-Zubair) to ensure an uninterrupted power supply.

The statement further explained that there was also an attempted theft and sabotage on the Khor Al-Zubair – Bab Al-Zubair line. However, ministry personnel successfully prevented the tower from collapsing, maintaining its stability.

In response to the sabotage, the Minister of Electricity, Ziad Ali Fadel, has instructed the maintenance teams from the General Company for Energy Transmission/Southern Region to begin repairing the damaged towers and restoring the lines to operation swiftly.

The Ministry has urged relevant security agencies to launch an urgent investigation into the incident and to enhance protection measures for energy transmission towers to ensure the stability of the electrical system.
