President Calls for Anniversary of March Uprising to Strengthen National Unity

Baghdad: The President of the Republic, Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, has called for the anniversary of the March 1991 Uprising to serve as a catalyst for strengthening national unity. The President emphasized the significance of this historical event in unifying the nation and fostering a sense of collective identity.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the President stated, “On the thirty-fourth anniversary of the popular uprising in the city of Sulaymaniyah on March 7, 1991, and the cities of Kurdistan and the popular uprising in the south of the country, we recall the great sacrifices of our proud people, who struggled against the injustice, tyranny and oppression practiced by the defunct regime, as these sacrifices resulted in the liberation of the cities of the region and vast areas in the south from the grip of the regime.”

He further elaborated on the historical significance of the uprising, highlighting Ranya as the starting point. “The first spark of the uprising began in the city of Ranya, the gateway to the uprising in Sulaymaniyah Governorate, which constituted a turning point towards liberating the rest of the cities from injustice and tyranny and establishing a democratic, pluralistic parliamentary system,” he added. The President urged that this anniversary be leveraged to enhance unity among the people and political forces, aiming to provide a free and dignified life for all citizens.
