Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani emphasized the need for comprehensive social security for workers across Iraq, highlighting that a significant portion of the workforce remains uninsured. Al-Sudani made these remarks during a meeting with representatives of labor union federations, held in celebration of International Workers’ Day.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, al-Sudani expressed his dedication to honoring the contributions of the working class, praising their historical sacrifices and vital role in state-building. He underscored the importance of Labor Day as an opportunity to assess the needs and conditions of workers, advocating for a legal and conducive work environment as essential for economic development.

Al-Sudani stated that the enactment of Labor Law No. 37 of 2015 and the Workers’ Retirement and Social Security Law No. 18 of 2023 mark significant progress in enhancing workers’ rights and the work environment. He stressed the importance of awareness and engagement among workers regarding their rights, and the pivotal role labor unions play in facilitating productive private sector employment.

He further elaborated on the government’s commitment to supporting the private sector as part of its economic reform strategy, including partnerships in the pharmaceutical, food, military, and fertilizer industries. Al-Sudani highlighted the establishment of inspection committees to ensure compliance with labor laws and the strides made in increasing the number of insured workers, thereby improving the overall work environment.

Al-Sudani concluded by reaffirming the government’s efforts to involve unions in decision-making processes, reinforcing their role within Iraq’s democratic framework and emphasizing continued support for the industrial sector through strategic decisions and the Iraq Development Fund.
