Baghdad: Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani confirmed that the government has prepared a specific timetable to achieve its goals in the field of energy projects. His media office stated that Al-Sudani met with US Under Secretary of Energy James Patrick Danley and his delegation, alongside the Charg© d’Affaires at the US Embassy, Joshua Harris.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, during the meeting, Al-Sudani highlighted the importance of the partnership and cooperation between Iraq and the United States across various fields. He mentioned that the government, by ensuring political, economic, and societal stability, has initiated numerous projects in the energy sector, which have led to significant positive changes throughout the country.
The Prime Minister revealed that the government has established a timetable for achieving its goals in energy and gas utilization, including self-sufficiency in producing high-octane gasoline. The aim is to achieve self-sufficiency in gas production by 2028 through government projects.
Al-Sudani stressed the importance of collaboration with US energy companies to advance development, train Iraqi personnel, and utilize the latest technology in oil field development and electricity production. He noted that such partnerships strengthen Iraq’s relations with the United States, based on mutual interests.
In response, the US Under Secretary of Energy highlighted the progress made in cooperation between the two nations, especially in energy project development. He emphasized that the US administration’s strategy focuses on enhancing partnership and investment, enabling Iraq to achieve energy self-sufficiency and potentially export surplus energy in the future.
The statement also detailed a significant development: Prime Minister Al-Sudani oversaw the signing of a contract for a floating gas regasification platform (FSRU) between Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity and the American company Excelerate Energy. The platform, with a capacity of 15 million cubic meters per day, will operate for five years, renewable. It aims to supply natural gas to power plants and diversify gas sources, offering a flexible and cost-effective solution to meet Iraq’s energy needs.
