Washington: Republicans in the US Senate have submitted an amendment to the tax and budget bill that includes eliminating current tax exemptions for electric vehicle buyers.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the amended version stipulates the end of the $7,500 exemption for the purchase of new electric vehicles, effective September 30, and the elimination of the $4,000 exemption for used vehicles.
This amendment represents a significant reversal from the pro-electric vehicle policies adopted by former President Joe Biden, which aimed to encourage the transition to clean energy and reduce carbon emissions.
The initial proposal stipulated the end of the exemptions 180 days after the law’s passage, with the immediate elimination of exemptions for leased vehicles that do not meet North American manufacturing requirements.
This move comes as part of a broader campaign by Republicans against green energy policies, with many of them opposing government incentives for electric vehicles, believing they distort the market and cost taxpayers billions of dollars.
